Eagles Soar to Team Title at Wartburg Spring Invite Behind Dominant Final Round

WAVERLY, IA- The #3 Kirkwood Eagles Golf Team delivered a statement performance this past weekend, capturing the team title at the Wartburg Spring Invite held at Prairie Links Golf Course in Waverly, Iowa on March 28–29. Competing against a 17-team field, the Eagles surged to the top with a two-day total of +3, highlighted by a remarkable turnaround on day two.

Kirkwood opened the tournament with a +8 team score in round one, putting themselves firmly in contention. But it was their second-round response that defined the weekend. The Eagles fired a -5 as a team in round two, one of the best rounds of the tournament, to separate themselves from the field and secure the championship.

Meanwhile, Kirkwood B also put together an impressive showing, finishing 4th overall at +20. After a challenging +20 in round one, the B squad bounced back with a composed and steady even-par round two, showcasing the program's depth and resilience.

Trio of Eagles Tie for Runner-Up Honors

Individually, the Eagles were well represented near the top of the leaderboard, with three players tying for second place at -1 overall.

  • Dean Roberts (Kirkwood B) turned in rounds of +1 and -2, using a strong second day to climb into contention.
  • Reid Hall (Kirkwood) posted a consistent -1 and even-par performance across the two rounds.
  • Ted Sargeant (Kirkwood) delivered one of the most impressive bounce-back rounds of the tournament, following a +3 opening round with a stellar -4 on day two.

Depth Drives Victory

Kirkwood's depth proved to be the difference-maker throughout the event.

  • Isaiah Zoske (Kirkwood) finished even overall, highlighted by a +2 in round one and -2 in round two, continuing the team's trend of strong second-day performances.
  • Ryan Lynch (Kirkwood) carded rounds of +4 and +4, finishing at +8 overall, with multiple birdies across both rounds.
  • Chase Jahde (Kirkwood) added a +7 finish, including a steady back nine in round two to help maintain the Eagles' momentum.

For Kirkwood B:

  • Jack Gomez finished at +5 overall, improving from +6 in round one to -1 in round two, one of the biggest individual turnarounds of the tournament.
  • Tanner Wachtl placed at +11, highlighted by a strong +5 second round.
  • Harry Downton came in at +7, delivering consistent scoring across both rounds.
  • Max Schuchmann rounded out the group at +18, including an improved second-round showing.

Strong Finish Seals It

What ultimately separated Kirkwood from the rest of the field was their ability to adjust and dominate on day two. Across both teams, the Eagles showed improved shot-making, cleaner scorecards, and the ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities—turning a solid first day into a championship performance.

With multiple players near the top of the leaderboard and both teams finishing inside the top four, the weekend reinforced Kirkwood's standing as one of the premier programs in the country.
