Eagles Cap Remarkable Season With Fourth-Place Finish at NJCAA National Championship
PLYMOUTH, IN- The #4-ranked Kirkwood Eagles closed out another outstanding season with a fourth-place finish at the NJCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championship, held May 19-22 at Swan Lake Golf Resort in Plymouth, Indiana. Competing against 23 of the nation's top programs, the Eagles battled through four demanding rounds and finished tied for fourth at +33 as a team, matching Meridian CC and finishing ahead of nationally ranked programs including Southeast CC, DMACC, Black Hawk, Iowa Central, and Northeast CC.
Kirkwood's consistency throughout the week was anchored by sophomore Ted Sargeant, who delivered one of the best individual performances in program history, tying for third nationally at +2 for the tournament. Isaiah Zoske also turned in a stellar week, tying for sixth individually at +4 to give the Eagles two top-10 national finishers.
Day One – Eagles Open Strong
Kirkwood opened the national championship with an impressive first-round performance, posting a team score of +4 to sit tied for third after 18 holes against one of the deepest fields in the country.
Ryan Lynch led the way with a 2-under 70, putting himself seventh individually after the opening round. Lynch caught fire early and stayed aggressive throughout the day, carding birdies on holes No. 1, 2, 5, 12, 15, and 18. He overcame bogeys on Nos. 8, 9, 13, and 17 to finish under par and give the Eagles an early spark.
Ted Sargeant added a steady 74 (+2), highlighted by birdies on holes No. 5, 6, 11, 15, and 18. His ability to respond throughout the round kept Kirkwood near the top of the leaderboard heading into day two.
Isaiah Zoske also posted a 74, recording birdies on holes No. 1, 3, 5, 15, and 17 as part of another strong opening-round effort for the Eagles.
Reid Hall rounded out the counting scores with a 74 of his own, highlighted by birdies on holes No. 1 and 15.
Behind four counting scores of 74 or better, the Eagles positioned themselves immediately in contention.
Day Two – Sargeant Surges Into Contention
The second round proved more difficult for much of the field, but Ted Sargeant delivered one of the steadiest rounds of the tournament to keep Kirkwood firmly in contention. The sophomore fired a 2-under 70, moving himself into a tie for third individually heading into round three.
Sargeant played nearly flawless golf throughout the day, carding birdies on holes No. 5 and No. 15 while avoiding a single bogey during the round. His clean card and steady play helped anchor the Eagles as scoring conditions tightened across the course.
Isaiah Zoske followed with a strong 71 (+1), highlighted by birdies on holes No. 5, 6, 15, and 18. Ryan Lynch battled through a tougher round to finish at 76, while Reid Hall added a 79.
At the halfway point of the championship, Kirkwood sat fifth overall at +12, still within striking distance of the leaders. Sargeant had climbed into seventh individually, while Zoske remained firmly inside the top 10.
Day Three – Eagles Stay Within Striking Distance
Moving day at the national championship saw Kirkwood continue to battle among the nation's top programs. The Eagles posted a third-round score of +12 and entered the final day in sixth place overall.
Sargeant once again paced the Eagles, shooting an even-par 72 to remain tied for fifth individually entering the final round. His round featured a birdie on hole No. 4 and a lone bogey on No. 14 as he continued to provide stability at the top of the lineup.
Lynch rebounded with a solid 75, highlighted by birdies on holes No. 2, 5, and 15. Zoske added a 76 with birdies on holes No. 1, 12, and 15.
One of the major storylines of the day came from Jack Gomez, who entered the lineup as a substitute in round three and delivered a valuable 78. Gomez recorded a birdie on hole No. 5 during his round. While his score was not used in the team total that day, his presence provided important depth heading into the final round.
Heading into Friday's finale, Kirkwood remained within striking distance of the top four and continued to showcase the depth and resilience that defined the Eagles all season long.
Final Round – Eagles Finish Fourth Nationally
Kirkwood saved one of its strongest collective efforts for the final day, shooting +9 as a team to climb into a tie for fourth nationally.
Zoske led the Eagles in the final round with a 71 (-1), one of the best rounds of the day among the top teams. He caught fire early with birdies on holes No. 2, 5, 7, and closed with a birdie on 15 to secure his tie for sixth nationally.
Sargeant capped off his phenomenal tournament with a 74 (+2), finishing tied for third overall in the national championship field. Over four rounds, Sargeant posted scores of 74-70-72-74 and was one of only four golfers in the entire tournament to finish at +2 or better.
Hall contributed a strong 77 in the final round, highlighted by birdies on 16 and 18. Gomez followed his third-round contribution with another solid 75, while Lynch battled through a difficult front nine before finishing the championship with a 78.
When the final putts dropped Friday afternoon, Kirkwood stood tied for fourth nationally at +33 alongside Meridian CC. Murray State (OK) captured the national championship at +15, while Heartland CC and South Mountain CC rounded out the top three.
The Eagles' fourth-place national finish capped another remarkable season for one of the nation's premier junior college golf programs. With two top-10 individual finishers, four rounds of national-level consistency, and multiple players stepping up throughout the week, Kirkwood once again proved it belongs among the elite programs in NJCAA Division II golf.
