Eagles Battle to the Finish in Overtime Thriller Against NIACC
Cedar Rapids, IA- The #5 Kirkwood Eagles Women's Basketball Team put together a gritty, back-and-forth performance Saturday afternoon at home against #13 NIACC, delivering a game that lived on the edge from opening tip to the final horn.
The stage was set for a memorable Saturday afternoon inside Johnson Hall, as the #5 Kirkwood Eagles Women's Basketball Team hosted #13 NIACC during Kirkwood's Hall of Fame weekend. With members of the 1997 Kirkwood Eagles women's basketball team in attendance—one of five inductees into the Kirkwood Hall of Fame Class of 2026 and the program's first national championship team—the atmosphere carried both celebration and significance.
Kirkwood matched the Trojans shot for shot in the first half, using balanced scoring and steady defensive pressure to keep the contest even. Neither team was able to create separation, and the Eagles went into the locker room tied 33–33, setting the tone for a tightly contested second half.
That rhythm continued after the break. Kirkwood briefly gained momentum behind timely baskets and strong rebounding, but NIACC responded each time. When regulation ended with the score locked at 60–60, the game headed to overtime with neither side willing to blink.
In the extra period, NIACC capitalized on key possessions and edged ahead late. The Eagles continued to fight, but a difficult overtime stretch ultimately resulted in a 71–66 loss.
Despite the outcome, Kirkwood received solid contributions across the lineup. Olivia Wren led the Eagles with 13 points, while Kennedy Blakely delivered a strong all-around effort with 12 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Off the bench, Claire Hudson provided a spark, knocking down three three-pointers on her way to 11 points in limited minutes. Kirkwood also controlled the glass and generated second-chance opportunities, keeping the game within reach until the final moments.
