Matthys’ Walk-Off Slam Headlines Eagles Sweep of Indian Hills

WEST LIBERTY, IA- The #5 Kirkwood Eagles delivered a thrilling and dominant doubleheader sweep over the Indian Hills Warriors on Friday afternoon at West Liberty High School, winning by scores of 5-2 and 15-9. The two victories showcased both late-game heroics and explosive offensive firepower, as the Eagles continued to assert themselves as one of the top teams in the nation.

Game 1: Matthys Delivers in Dramatic Fashion

In a tightly contested seven-inning opener, the Eagles found themselves trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Despite being held to just three hits through the first six frames, Kirkwood saved its biggest moment for last.

With the bases loaded and the game on the line, Wrigley Matthys stepped to the plate and delivered a walk-off grand slam, instantly turning a one-run deficit into a 5-2 victory. Matthys accounted for four of the Eagles' five RBIs in the game and provided the defining moment of the afternoon.

Kirkwood's offense was limited overall, finishing with just three hits, but it made them count when it mattered most. Ty Andrews added a triple, while CJ Davis drove in the team's other run.

On the mound, Reece Wrage set the tone early with four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. Tate Proskovec picked up the win in relief, tossing three innings while striking out five and allowing two runs.

Game 2: Offensive Explosion Powers Eagles

The nightcap turned into an offensive showcase, as Kirkwood erupted for 15 runs on 19 hits in a nine-inning slugfest.

After falling behind early, the Eagles responded with a five-run second inning and never looked back, scoring in six different innings. The lineup produced contributions from top to bottom in one of their most complete offensive performances of the season.

Alex Altmann led the charge with a monster game, going 4-for-5 with three home runs and five RBIs. Brady Blake added three hits, including a home run and two RBIs, while Wrigley Matthys continued his strong day with two hits, three runs scored, and two RBIs.

Blake Lundholm chipped in with two doubles and an RBI, and Jax Theeler added two hits and two RBIs. Landon Jasper also went deep and drove in two runs, while Adam Kayko contributed a pair of hits, including a triple.

On the mound, the Eagles used a bullpen approach. Ayden Schrunk earned the win with three solid innings of relief, allowing just two runs while striking out three. Rafe McConnell and Reid Burkle combined to shut the door late, holding Indian Hills scoreless over the final three innings.
