Eagles Deliver Statement Sweep in Sunday Doubleheader
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA- The #10 Kirkwood Eagles put together a complete and convincing performance on Sunday, controlling both ends of a doubleheader against the Ellsworth Panthers. Behind a lineup that struck early and often, paired with strong outings on the mound, the Eagles secured wins of 16-6 and 11-0 to take firm command of the series.
Kirkwood wasted no time setting the tone in Game 1, erupting for a jaw-dropping 12 runs in the opening inning and never looking back. The early offensive barrage put Ellsworth on its heels immediately, as the Eagles piled up 10 hits and 16 total runs in the contest.
Leading the charge was Wrigley Matthys, who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and set the table all afternoon. Ty Andrews and Landon Frost delivered the biggest blows, each driving in three runs, with Frost launching a home run to cap off a dominant performance at the plate. Will Nuss added two RBIs of his own, while Adam Kayko chipped in another as Kirkwood's lineup proved relentless from top to bottom.
On the mound, Reece Wrage picked up the win, staying perfect at 4-0 on the season. The bullpen pieced together the rest of the game, limiting damage despite scattered threats and securing the 16-6 victory.
If Game 1 was about offensive fireworks, Game 2 was a display of complete dominance. The Eagles controlled every aspect of the game en route to an 11-0 shutout win, highlighted by a lights-out performance from Drew Zemaitis. The right-hander tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out seven to improve to 5-0 on the year.
Offensively, the Eagles remained sharp and efficient. Brady Blake turned in a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with extra-base hits, including a double and a triple. Landon Frost continued his standout day, driving in four runs, while CJ Davis added a triple and two RBIs. Contributions came from throughout the lineup, with Nathan Motl and Cam Templeton also driving in runs as Kirkwood racked up 10 hits in the shortened contest.
The Eagles jumped out early once again, scoring six runs in the first inning before adding insurance in the second and a decisive four-run fourth inning to seal the run-rule victory.
Across both games, Kirkwood combined for 27 runs, 20 hits, and a dominant presence on the mound.
