Eagles Open ICCAC Play with 3-0 Sweep of Trojans

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA- The #5 Kirkwood Eagles Baseball team opened ICCAC play in dominant fashion this weekend, sweeping the NIACC Trojans in a three-game series at the Kirkwood Baseball Field. With the 3-0 weekend, the Eagles extended their win streak to an impressive 19 games, using timely hitting, power at the plate, and depth on the mound to secure the sweep.

Game 1 (7 innings): Kirkwood 12, NIACC 7

In the series opener, the Eagles used a massive fifth inning to break the game open and never looked back. Trailing early, Kirkwood erupted for nine runs in the fifth to take full control.

Landon Frost led the offensive charge with a home run and 4 RBIs, while Alex Altmann added a huge performance, going 2-for-3 with a home run and 3 RBIs. Cam Templeton also went deep and drove in two, highlighting a three-homer game for the Eagles. 

On the mound, Jackson Niederwerder earned the win, striking out eight over five innings, while Reid Burkle closed things out with a scoreless frame.

Game 2 (9 innings): Kirkwood 10, NIACC 9

Game two turned into a back-and-forth battle, but the Eagles once again delivered in key moments to secure the win.

Blake Lundholm set the tone at the top of the lineup, scoring three runs and launching a home run, while Brady Blake added a homer and two RBIs. Jax Theeler had a big day as well, going 2-for-5 with a home run and 3 RBIs. Alex Altmann continued his strong weekend with another home run and 3 RBIs. 

Out of the bullpen, Collin Homan picked up the win, providing stability late as Kirkwood held off a late NIACC push.

Game 3 (9 innings): Kirkwood 7, NIACC 6

The finale proved to be the tightest contest of the weekend, but the Eagles once again found a way.

Kirkwood jumped ahead early with a five-run third inning and held on down the stretch. Landon Frost stayed hot, blasting another home run and driving in three runs. Will Nuss added a home run and 2 RBIs, while Alex Altmann continued his consistent production with two hits and an RBI. 

On the mound, Carson Costello earned the win in relief, while Reid Burkle recorded the save to secure the sweep.

 

Next Up

The Eagles return to action this Wednesday when they head to Marshalltown to take on the Marshalltown Tigers in a doubleheader, starting at 12 PM.
