Late Push Falls Short as No. 10 Eagles Drop Series Finale

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA- The #10 Kirkwood Eagles wrapped up their three-game series with the Ellsworth Panthers on Monday afternoon in Cedar Rapids, battling until the final outs but ultimately falling 9–7 in a tightly contested matchup.

Despite outhitting Ellsworth 13–12, the Eagles couldn't quite overcome a series of timely extra-base hits from the Panthers, including four home runs that proved to be the difference.

Kirkwood showed resilience throughout, highlighted by a strong performance from Wrigley Matthys at the top of the lineup. The center fielder went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a two-run home run, helping ignite the Eagles' offense. Brady Blake also delivered a standout day at the plate, collecting three hits, driving in a run, and drawing a walk while adding pressure on the basepaths with a stolen base.

The middle of the order contributed key production as well. Landon Frost and Jax Theeler each recorded RBI hits, with Theeler adding a pair of hits and Frost doubling as part of his effort. Alex Altmann chipped in with two hits and an RBI, continuing a balanced offensive attack that kept Kirkwood within striking distance all afternoon.

After trailing early, the Eagles surged back with a four-run sixth inning to even the game, showcasing their ability to string together quality at-bats. However, Ellsworth responded late, pushing across insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings to regain control.

On the mound, Kirkwood utilized multiple arms in an effort to contain the Panthers' power-heavy lineup. Kye Smith struck out six over 4.2 innings in the start, while the bullpen combined to keep the game close, but Ellsworth's timely hitting ultimately proved decisive.
