Eagles Take Down No. 3 Southeastern in Statement Road Sweep

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA- The #9 Kirkwood Eagles picked up a big ICCAC road sweep Wednesday in West Burlington, taking down #3 Southeastern by scores of 12-3 and 12-11.

Kirkwood set the tone early in Game 1, scoring four runs in the second inning and continuing to build from there. The Eagles finished with 13 hits in the win. Alex Altmann led the offense with three hits, two home runs, and five RBIs, while Wrigley Matthys added two doubles and four RBIs. Landon Frost chipped in three hits, including a home run.

On the mound, Jackson Niederwerder earned the win, going 5.2 innings and allowing three runs while striking out four. Rafe McConnell closed it out with 1.1 scoreless innings.

Game 2 turned into a back-and-forth battle. Kirkwood broke things open with an eight-run fourth inning, but Southeastern answered and eventually tied the game late.

The Eagles found a way in the ninth, scoring the go-ahead run on a wild pitch to secure the 12-11 win.

Kirkwood totaled 16 hits in the second game. Brady Blake had four hits and two RBIs, while Ty Andrews added a home run and two RBIs. Altmann stayed hot with two more home runs and five RBIs in the game. Cam Templeton also contributed with a triple and an RBI.

Out of the bullpen, Reid Burkle picked up the win, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings with six strikeouts to finish the game.

The Eagles return home to face #16 Iowa Central in a three-game series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 PM.
