Top-Ranked Eagles Hold Off NIACC in Back-To-Back Wins
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA- The #1 Kirkwood Eagles Softball team continued to prove why they sit atop the national rankings on Monday afternoon, grinding out a doubleheader sweep over ICCAC rival NIACC with wins of 7–2 and 7–6 in Cedar Rapids.
In the opener, Kirkwood wasted no time setting the tone, erupting for five runs in the first inning and never looking back. Shannon Finn sparked the offense with a 3-for-4 performance, scoring twice and driving in a run, while Kinsley Theobald added two hits and an RBI to keep the pressure on the Trojans' pitching staff. The Eagles showcased balance throughout the lineup, with RBIs coming from six different players.
Inside the circle, Libby Trewin delivered another dominant outing, going the distance while allowing just two runs on three hits and striking out seven. Her command and consistency kept NIACC off balance all game, securing her 22nd win of the season.
Game two presented a much tougher test, as NIACC jumped out early and forced the Eagles into a back-and-forth battle. Kirkwood responded with steady offensive production, totaling 11 hits in the contest. Mischa Reiners led the charge with two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI, while Breckin De La Rosa drove in a pair and Addison Ohda added two hits and an RBI of her own.
Trailing late, the Eagles found a way once again. Clutch hitting and aggressive baserunning helped Kirkwood plate two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead for good. The team's speed was on full display, swiping multiple bases and applying constant pressure that ultimately proved decisive.
In relief, Trewin returned to shut the door, tossing two strong innings and striking out four to earn the win in game two, highlighting her impact on both ends of the doubleheader.
